One of Giambologna's masterpieces
Neptune's Fountain

This is probably the most famous fountain in Bologna.
The trident of the statue features also in the iconic logo of the Maserati cars brand.

The heart of the historical center
Piazza Maggiore

This is the beating heart of the historical center in Bologna, where all the main buildings of the town are settled.
This square is so big that's often used for public shows such as fairs or concerts.

The biggest church in Bologna
San Petronio's Basilica

Although being the biggest church in Bologna and the sixth bigger in Italy, this is not its Cathedral (which is St. Peter's Church).
Its construction was halted by the Pope when he discovered that, in the original project, the church would have been bigger than St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.

Former seat of the most ancient University
Archiginnasio

This building hosted for some time the University of Bologna, that's reported to be the most ancient University in the world (1088).
Today it hosts the Municipal Library.

A square that's not a square
Piazza Santo Stefano

St. Stephen's Square is not strictly a square. It's made by the intersection of two big roads creating the square effect. You probably won't find this name on a Bologna map, although Bolognese citizens are used to call it with this name.

Taste the typical Bolognese flavours
Food Quarter - Mercato di Mezzo

Located in the Food Quarter, Mercato di Mezzo is the place where you can get some food and taste the typical Bolognese flavours since the Middle Age.
This was an open air area before being covered after the Italian Union (1860).
